What Can Go Wrong with DIY Cleaning
- Tap water deposits — Florida tap water is hard; using it leaves white mineral streaks that reduce output
- Wrong cleaning agents — household soaps, vinegar, or detergents can damage anti-reflective coatings
- Pressure washers — too much pressure can crack glass, breach weatherproof seals, or void your warranty
- Scratching — abrasive pads or sponges permanently score the glass surface
- Fall risk — roof injuries are among the most common home-maintenance accidents
What Manufacturer Warranties Actually Say
Most panel manufacturers specify that cleaning must be done with clean water and non-abrasive materials. Some explicitly require deionized water. Using tap water or improper tools may not immediately damage panels, but it can give manufacturers grounds to deny a warranty claim if damage occurs later.
Many inverter and panel warranties also require documented maintenance records. Professional service providers can supply these; a DIY rinse cannot.
When DIY Is Fine
Rinsing with a garden hose after a heavy pollen event — when no hard water is involved and panels are accessible from the ground — is generally low-risk. But for a thorough cleaning that actually removes mineral films and restores full output, professional equipment and purified water make a measurable difference.
